Welcome to GRT Counselling

  • Hello, I’m Gabriel Tolentino.

I am an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) and an approved Victims Services Counsellor.

I have a Master’s Degree in Counselling Social Work from the University of NSW. I’ve been in the social work field for about 20 years, starting with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and a Diploma of Community Services. During this time, I have acquired extensive experience across various sectors, including non-governmental and government services. This includes areas of practice in homelessness, grief and bereavement, child protection, mental health, addiction and substance abuse treatment, domestic family violence, victims of crime, trauma, couple and family therapy, and adult higher education.

My areas of interest in clinical practice are trauma, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and addiction & problematic substance use. My background as a social worker has equipped me with a deep sense of compassion, empathy, and understanding. I am trained in and utilise a range of therapeutic modalities including Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Mindfulness, Couple and Family Systems Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT).

I really care about helping people in achieving stability and improve their mental health. My main goal is to make a safe and trusting space where you can talk about and work through difficult emotions and memories, helping you heal and move forward.

At GRT Counselling, your journey towards growth & recovery is a journey of Connection, Collaboration & Empowerment.

Together, we will navigate the path to a more fulfilled and empowered self.

Growth & Recovery Through Counselling

At GRT Counselling, we believe in the transformative power of Connection, Collaboration, and Empowerment in fostering personal growth and facilitating recovery. Our approach is grounded in these three core principles, each playing a vital role in your journey towards healing and self-discovery.

Here’s how we do it:

Collaboration: The Path We Walk Together

Tailored Strategies:  Recognising that each journey is unique, we collaborate closely with you to tailor strategies that resonate with your personal goals and challenges.

Shared Decision-Making: Your opinions matter a lot. Together, we navigate the healing process, making decisions that align with your values and aspirations.

Connection: The Foundation of Our Practice

Deep Understanding:  We prioritise building a deep, empathetic connection with every individual. Understanding your unique story and experiences is the first step towards meaningful change.

Safe Space: Our space is all about trust and being open. You can share your thoughts freely here, without any worry.

Empowerment: The Destination We Aim For

Building Strengths:  We focus on helping you see and use your strengths, giving you the tools and confidence to keep growing and healing on your own.

Fostering Independence: Our ultimate goal is to see you thrive independently, ready to handle whatever comes your way with confidence, resilience and self-awareness.

“GROWTH IS NEVER BY MERE CHANCE; IT IS THE RESULT OF FORCES WORKING TOGETHER.”

— James Cash Penney

Let’s Get Started

Taking the first step and reaching out is not always easy, it will require courage and commitment, but together we can explore and work through the issues that are holding you back in your life.

Here to Help Through Life’s Challenges.

Counselling is a helpful process that makes it easier for people to deal with tough emotions like trauma, sadness, mistreatment, and feelings of shame or guilt. It's a way to get clearer about your thoughts, look at different options, understand what’s important to you, and get to know yourself better. Counselling offers tools for creating strategies, accepting yourself, questioning harmful beliefs, figuring out why you act certain ways, and changing unhealthy behaviours.

It's good for getting to grips with your feelings and the challenges you face in life, helping you to form better habits and set healthy limits. It can improve how you get along with others, encourage you to take care of yourself, and help you feel more secure in who you are. It gives you the chance to change how you see your story, moving from negative feelings and distrust to seeing yourself as strong, brave, caring, and worthy.

Flexible options to fit your needs.

At GRT Counselling, we understand that everyone has different preferences and needs when it comes to therapy. That's why we offer both face-to-face, phone, and online appointments, so you can choose the option that works best for you.

Whether you prefer the convenience of virtual sessions or the personal connection of in-person meetings, we're here to support you every step of the way.

WE ACKNOWLEDGE & PAY OUR RESPECTS

We acknowledge and pay respects to the Traditional Custodians and Elders of the Yuin Nation, past, present, and emerging. We recognize their continuing connection to the land, waters, and culture. We also acknowledge the important contributions of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in the ongoing process of reconciliation and healing. This acknowledgement is a way to show respect and appreciation for the land and the people who have lived on it for thousands of years. It is also a way to recognize the ongoing struggles and injustices faced by Aboriginal communities and to commit to working towards reconciliation and healing.
